It's been well over two years since sports betting went live in Virginia. From January 21, 2021, until a week ago, fifteen (15) sports betting operators went to work taking retail and or mobile sports bets. Well, the number of operators has risen to sixteen (16) with this week's addition of SuperBook Sports.
For the people who don't know, it was 1993 when Superbook opened the largest retail sportsbook in the world. After 30 years, the 30,000 sq. foot facility is still the king of retail sportsbooks.
Given the operator's reputation within the U.S. sports betting community, it should come as no surprise that Superbook would want to be a viable sports betting in other parts of the country. It's fair to say they will be a welcomed addition in Virginia. Likewise, Superbook's management is thrilled to open in an important state like Virginia.
In a SuperBook press release, CEO Mark Lipperelli has this to say:
"We couldn’t be happier with our continued growth. We are thrilled to be live in Virginia and feel confident that we have a great product with a strong history that will become a fast favorite of sports bettors in the region."
By entering the fray in Virginia, Sportsbook can now boast about having sports betting operations in nine (9) states, including Virginia. The other eight (8) states include:
The fact that each of these states ranks in the top 15 among U.S. sports betting operators in terms of handle is intentional. The company has openly decided to focus its efforts on bigger markets while leaving the smaller markets to the competition. At this time, the company has expressed no desire to operate in states like South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming.
Company officials are well aware that the competition for business will be fierce in the larger markets. However, there is a sense they are ready to embrace the competition. Jay Kornegay, SuperBook Executive Vice President of Race & Sports Book Operations told the press:
"Going live in Virginia is a perfect complement to our quickly growing business in Maryland. With our heritage and the passion that fans bring in that area, it is sure to be a great fit."
One of the reasons for this confidence can be attributed to the fact that SuperBook has been able to sign a partnership deal with the Baltimore Orioles (MLB) at Camden Yards in Baltimore. The timing of the deal could not be better after the upstart Orioles finally made it back to the American League playoffs for only the 4th time since the start of the century.
Boosted by its connection to a young Orioles team that looks to have a very bright future, expectations from SuperBook management are running high. The brand may not have the same name recognition as BetMGM, DraftKings, and Fanduel, but they do know a thing or two about serving U.S. sports bettors. This is certainly an operator that should be on the radar of Virginia sports bettors.
