In the early part of 2019, government representatives representing the residents of Washington D.C. passed D.C. Law 22-312. This law legalized sports betting in the regions. Sports betting launched in the D.C. area in May of 2020.
Under the terms of the new law, four Class A locations were designated where sports betting activities would be allowed. These four locations include Capital One Arena, Audi Field, Nationals Park, and St. Elizabeths East Entertainment and Sports Arena. Note: All of these Class A locations play host to one of Washington D.C.'s major professional sports franchises.
The law also provided provisions for Class B and C sports betting licensing that would go to approved bars and restaurants.
In the case of the Class A locations, each facility is currently allowed to operate one retail sportsbook within two miles of the location, but not in the location. For an additional licensing fee, they can apply to have multiple locations within the same two-mile radius. In addition to the retail sportsbooks, each location will be permitted to engage one online sports betting website.

Here are some other details related to this legislation. The applicable tax rate will be 10% on all sports betting revenue. Bettors will not be permitted to bet on D.C. college teams. The sports betting age in D.C. is 18 years old.
