With more than half the U.S. states yet to have decided on the legal sports betting issue, there is a lot of news going around out there in the sports betting world. In fact, the news is coming out of so many states at such a high speed that it's difficult for interested parties to stay informed. With that in mind, the following sections will address the sports betting going Ons in Washington State, Washington D.C., Louisiana, Massachusetts, and Connecticut.
The Washington State Gaming Commission has officially released the new WA sports betting rules for Washington residents to see. Procedurally, the public will now have the opportunity to make their comments.
Based on the current progress, it looks like another iteration or two is all that will be needed to firm up the rules into final status. It is expected that the final draft of these rules should ready and approved by no later than July 28, 2021. At that point, there would be awaiting period of 31 days before the law formally goes into effect.
Washington D.C. residents can now legally bet on sports through their mobile devices with one very important caveat. They must be within two blocks of a designated sports betting area to do so. That would include Nationals Park or Capital One Arena where mobile sports betting monopolies have been secured by BetMGM and William Hill, respectively.
In the state of Louisiana, current sports betting legislation has passed through the Senate by a vote of 33-3. The bill will now to headed to the desk of Gov. John Bel Edwards where it is expected to be signed immediately.
Under the guidelines of this law, 20 betting licenses will be distributed among 55 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes where sports betting will be legal. The goal is to have everything in place so the state's sports bettors will be able to start wagering on the second Thursday of September. That's the first day of the 2021 NFL regular season.
By all indications, the conversation about sports betting in the state of Massachusetts looks to be gaining speed. With that said, there is still a lot of work to be done as legislators work through 19 different sports betting bills that are up for discussion. If nothing gets resolved by the early part of August, there is very little chance Mass sports bettors will be wagering on the New England Patriots by the start of the 2021 NFL regular season.
With 15 lottery-owned retail sportsbooks up for grabs through the Connecticut State Lottery, top U.S. bookmakers are putting forth their presentations for this coveted spot. The lottery will be looking to announce a winner very soon. That winner will join Draftkings (with the Mashantucket Pequot) and Kambi (with the Mohegan Indians) as the only three CT sports betting operators. It looks like the original 15 presentations have been whittled down to the final 5.
