Louisiana Online Poker

While progress was slow, the state of Louisiana is about to see live sports betting at some point in October. The state took a very pragmatic approach and put the passing of sports betting legislation in the hands of residents who voted on the sports betting referendum in the November 2020 election. The results were conclusive. Sports betting was legalized in 55 of the state's 64 parishes.

The new law will allow residents to legally wager in the approved parishes only. The state's 15 retail casinos and 5 racinos (horse racing + casino) will be permitted to seek sports betting licenses. In each case, they will be allowed to seek to license for two sports betting skins or operators.

Also, the Louisiana Lottery will be permitted to seek one sports betting license. They will be permitted to run one online sport betting skin, plus retail sports betting kiosks throughout the state. That's a total of 41 potential sports betting licensees operating within the state.

Should any of the current retail casinos decide to pass on getting sports betting licenses, the available licenses will be made available to other gambling interests located in the state.

Based on the new sports betting legislation, licensees will need to pay an application and licensing fee. They will also need to absorb a tax rate of 10% on retail operations and 15% on online operations.
