Louisiana has become one of the most recent US states to legalize online sports betting. Residents of the Pelican State voted to allow sports betting with mobile devices and computers in the recent 2020 election, but it could take a few more months for online sportsbooks to appear.
55 of the 64 parishes in Louisiana voted to legalize sports betting on November 4, 2020. This came after multiple efforts in the state to craft an online sports betting bill. The law provides for online sports betting on a parish-by-parish basis.
State lawmakers have yet to determine the precise framework that legalized sports betting will take in Louisiana. Most feel that provisions will be made to allow sports betting with mobile devices. In nearby Arkansas sports betting is allowed only at live betting venues such as Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs.
It will also have to be determined how gaming providers will receive licenses to offer sports betting in the state. There are also taxation issues to consider.
Some lawmakers that opposed the legalization of sports betting in Louisiana could try to delay the setup process. Even so, most seem to agree that sports betting sites should begin to appear in 2021.
Bettors in Louisiana will be able to make wagers on both professional and collegiate sporting events. Bets will be offered on football, basketball, boxing, and many other types of sports. Louisiana has previously voted to allow betting on fantasy sports, but no platforms have yet been established thanks to the same hurdles online sports betting must now overcome.
