While California, Florida, and Texas get a lot of press related to sports betting in those respective states, other states are still lingering in the shadows. One of those states is Georgia. Indeed, there hasn't been much talk about the legalization of sports betting in Georgia to date. It looks like that might be changing.
As 2023 winds to a close, the Georgia legislation has closed for the year. At the same time, some State Senators are already looking forward to next year. One of those senators is Senator Brandon Beach, who has his mind set on proposing new sports betting legislation next year.
It looks like Beach and a few of his fellow senators are looking forward to presenting a proposal that would call for the expansion of gambling options in Georgia. He recently discussed his proposal at a recent meeting of the Joint Committees on Economic Development and Tourism.
By all indications, Beach is expected to present his proposal during the first legislative session of 2024. It's noteworthy this will not be his first attempt to get sports betting legislation to the Georgia Senate floor with the latest attempt coming in the most recent legislative session. This time, he seems motivated to get something in front of voters by the 2024 election cycle or thereafter.
It's noteworthy that the Georgia State Lottery and National Lotteries are the only legal forms of gambling that are currently allowed in Georgia. That would lead one to believe that Beach's proposal will likely cast a wide net in an attempt to expand gambling access for residents. With that in mind, here are some of the details of what could be included in his legislative amendment:
As a point of interest, the tax revenue allocation roadmap might look like this: 50% will go to infrastructure projects, 20% will go to rural healthcare, 20% will go to mental health services, and the final 10% will go to the state's historically Black colleges and universities.
This would not be the first sports betting rodeo in Georgia. The reluctance of state leaders to support gambling initiatives is well-documented. If this proposal is submitted, this would make it six (6) straight legislative sessions where gambling legislation was considered.
The reason why this proposal might get more attention is because it would fall during a presidential election year. The fact this election year figures to be among the most contentious in history, that alone could drive a lot of Georgia voters to the polls. If the right initiative is sitting on the ballot, Georgia voters would get the final say.
Will there be an initiative? That remains to be seen. However, Beach looks ready to carry the gambling ball into 2024.
