It's been more than three years in the making. The journey for the approval of sports betting in Connecticut start in May of 2018 and now, the sports betting windows will be opening for state residents on October 7, 2021.
Based on the sports betting legislation that was passed earlier this year, there will be three major participants in the Connecticut sports betting industry. First, Foxwoods Resort Casino and Mohegan Sun casinos will maintain control over retail and online sports betting operations with a solitary exception. The Connecticut Lottery will also have the right to provide retail and online sports betting operations for the benefit of residents.
While the Foxwoods Resort and Mohegan Sun casinos will be running retail operations out of their casino facilities, their largest focus will be on providing online sports betting access through online sports betting operators DraftKings and FanDuel, respectively. For the Lottery's part, they have contracted with Rush Street Interactive to run an online sportsbook in areas not covered by the Mashantucket Pequot and Mohegan Tribes.
Under the provisions of the law, Tribal concerns will be paying 25% of its slot revenue for the exclusive rights to provide sports betting in areas not controlled by the Lottery. In addition to the slot revenue sharing, the Tribes will also need to pay taxes at the rate of 13.75% on sports betting revenue and 18% on online casino revenue over the next five years. For the following five years, the tax rate on online casino gambling will go up to 20%.
Currently, the Connecticut Lottery has plans to open 10 retail sportsbooks in the next month. The locations of these retail operations will include Hartford, Manchester, Milford, New Britain, New Haven, Norwalk, Stamford, Torrington, Waterbury, and Windsor Locks. Later this year or early next year, there will be an additional five retail sports added with most of them located in the Hartford area.
To be clear, there is still one final hurdle to be crossed. The U.S. Department of the Interior still needs to give its final approval to the new details of the Tribal compacts that were signed to facilitate the new sports betting legislation. With that said, there are no foreseeable issues and final approval should be forthcoming any time now.
As far as the riles related to betting on college sports, Connecticut sports bettors will only be permitted to wager on the state's college programs if one of the said programs is participating in an NCAA tournament with at least four other participants. That clears the way for sports bettors to wager on Connecticut sports teams during major sports events like March Madness tournaments for both men and women. If games or events do not include Connecticut teams, bettors will be free to wager at will.
For the benefit of Connecticut sports bettors, they will be happy to learn they will be able to wager on sports games and events from all over the world in just a few short weeks.
