Michigan and Virginia Open Sports Betting Windows

January 29, 2021

For one state, it was business as expected. For the other state, it was a surprise launch of sports betting for the state’s residents.

In the state of Michigan, there has been an ongoing effort underway to get online bookmakers up and running before the Super Bowl. After several months of delays and a couple of missed opportunities, the state of Michigan has finally opened access to online betting for the state’s sports betting population.

If the early returns are any indication of success or failure, the state of Michigan should soon be rising through the ranks of the states with the biggest sports betting handle and revenue. With multiple online bookmakers already in the mix and more waiting in the wings, the nation’s sports betting experts will be waiting with high expectations for the numbers to come out for the first week of action.

Virginia Surprises State Resident

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the state’s sports bettors were given a special treat when FanDuel Sportsbook was officially given the green light to start accepting wagers this past weekend. There is no indication why the launch seemed to come under the cloak of darkness, but the state’s sports bettors aren’t complaining.

Within 24 hours of FanDuel getting to work accepting wagers, the Virginia Lottery Commission announced the DraftKings had officially been granted licensing to join FanDuel as the state’s first two bookmakers.

As of this week, BetMGM and William Hill have also been licensed to operate online sports betting in Virginia.

Heading into the future, the VA lottery will continue to make similar announcements regarding other bookmakers that will be granted licensing. It’s basically a “wake up and see” approach that sets the table for few surprises in the future.

States Prepare for Robust Super Bowl Action

With the Super Bowl less than two weeks away, sports bettors across the nation are waiting in great anticipation for the opportunity to place their wagers legally for the first time outside of Nevada, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

This year’s Super Bowl features defending Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers led by QB Tom Brady, who will be looking to add another Super Bowl ring to his already impressive Hall of Fame resume.

The game figures to be a high-scoring affair, something the nation’s football fans seem to really embrace. Based on expectations, the sports betting handle on this Super Bowl is expected to smash all prior records with more than 20 states ready to accept wagers.
