While Wyoming might not be the largest sports betting market in the U.S. it's still an important one. It's important to the folks in Wyoming who have always longed to be able to legally bet on sports from the comforts of home. It's also an important sports betting market for the U.S. retail and online/mobile operators that are competing fiercely for business from a population of approximately 450,000 adults.
Currently, there are six (6) licensed operators that are accepting mobile sports bets. That list includes BetMGM, DraftKings, Caesars Sportsbook, Fanduel, and a new entrant into the market, that being Fanatics. ESPN Bet is also licensed in Wyoming but has yet to launch its sports betting app.
It was just a little more than a year ago that Fanatics, a popular U.S.-based sportswear concern, purchased the U.S. assets of the Australian-based mobile bookmaker PointsBets. At the time of the purchase, Fanatics management pledged to rebrand its sports betting platform and come to market with a feature-rich tool upon which U.S. sports bettors can rely. Mission accomplished!
Under the the new platform, Fanatics now finds itself operating in 21 states with Wyoming being the latest addition. Regarding the launch in Wyoming, Fanatics Vice President of Communications Kevin Hennessy stated in an interview with PlayUSA.com:
“We love going into a new market and giving sports fans a distinct alternative to the status quo.”
Regarding his comment related to the status quo, he believes it's the added value features that will entice Wyoming sports bettors to give Fanatics a look. Hennessey further stated:
“Our competitors like to focus on how many markets they have – so there is a lot of scrolling to find the bets and markets that customers want. Customer research told us that while it’s great to have a lot of markets – we want to find the bets that we love quickly.”
Management at Fanatics could well be correct. In the competition for new customers, anything that adds extra value for bettors could be the deciding factor when new customers search for a mobile sports betting home. At Fanatics, the extra value comes from the following:
As for the future, Fanatics will be looking at an opportunity to start offering access to its online casino platform. That opportunity might not be that far out in the future given that the Wyoming legislature has been looking into the matter in recent months.
It's a no-go for now as the House voted 25-36-1 not to address the matter in 2024. However, hopes are high that something will get done next year, and Fanatics plans on being first in line to launch an online casino platform.
