September 28, 2023, will go down in Kentucky history as the day it all finally came into being. That's the day the first legal sports bet was accepted in the state. This is a historical moment in the eyes of Kentucky residents who have waited their entire adult lives for a chance to wager on the Kentucky Wildcats and Louisville Cardinals from the comforts of home.
Right out of the box, seven (7) retail/mobile sports betting operators were ready to start taking bets at 6:00 a.m. CT on the 28th. That's the time that the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) waved the green flag and bets started flowing into the betting windows.
Kudos go to the powers-to-be at the KHRC for getting licenses into the hands of seven (7) operators as quickly as they did. In fact, licenses were handed out early enough that each licensed operator was able to start pre-registering new customers as early as a couple of weeks ago. During the pre-registration and in the spirit of competition, each of the new operators was able to offer special bonuses to pre-registered customers.
It should come as no surprise that the first seven (7) sports betting operators in the fold read like the whose who of the U.S. sports betting community. That includes:
By law, each operator is aligned with a Kentucky racetrack and or casino under which they will be permitted to accept retail and or mobile sports bets. All mobile operations are fully compatible with the iOS for Apple and Android operating systems. While pre-registration bonuses are no longer available, each of these new Kentucky sports betting operators has posted a Welcome Bonus that is worthy of consideration.
While being a day or two late to the party, it's nice to see that Circa Sports has officially been licensed to accept sports bets in Kentucky. The company's license was secured in partnership with the Mint Gaming Hall Cumberland, near Williamsburg. They will also be accepting bets through Mint Gambling Hall's three satellite operations.
Initially, Circa Sports will be focusing on the retail sports betting business. They do anticipate the launch of mobile sports betting by the end of the year, which would be in time for the NFL playoffs.
This is the fifth state in which Circa Sports is now accepting bets. The other states include Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, and the operator's home state of Nevada.
In a press release related to the Kentucky launch, Circa Sports CEO Derek Stevens told the press:
“Circa Sports has experienced tremendous growth since our 2019 launch, and we’re thrilled to introduce our operations to the great Commonwealth of Kentucky. We are grateful to our partners at Cumberland Run for bringing this to life and look forward to sharing what the brand has in store for Kentucky.”
Whether or not Circa Sports intends to be a major player within the U.S. sports betting community remains to be seen. For now, five (5) states is a good start.
