Around the Sports Betting Horn in America

July 8, 2021

In the U.S. sports betting community, nothing is set in stone until it is actually set in stone. This week, the U.S. sports betting community reported a few surprises. This is just further evidence that keeping track of the goings-on is nearly impossible as a number of states are frantically working to get sports betting out to its resident. Let's take a look at what happened this past week in Wisconsin, North Carolina, Arizona, and Connecticut.

What's Happening in Wisconsin?

Not one, but two deals were truck this week with Tribal representatives in Wisconsin. Both the Oneida Nation and Forest County Potawatomi tribes have agreed to terms with Gov. Tony Evers to bring sports betting to the residents of Wisconsin. It's good to see these deals get done while the state has been losing potential tax revenue to neighboring states like Michigan and Illinois.

Assuming these new compact agreements get approved as is by the US Department of the Interior in a quick fashion, residents of the state could have access to legal sports betting options before the end of the year.

Terms of this deal have not yet been released.

What's Happening in North Carolina?

The fact that residents in North Carolina can legally place sports wagers through state casinos run by Tribal concerns did not close the book on sports betting in North Carolina. According to Senate President Pro Tem Phil Berger, he expects the State Senate to discuss a new sports betting bill (SB 688) later this year.

In this bill is language that would authorize the state gambling regulator to issue 12 retail sports betting licenses to the state's pro sports franchises, namely the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets.

No response has been issued by Tribal leaders.

What's Happening in Arizona?

While top online bookmakers are scrambling to get deals with Arizona Indian Tribes, one prominent U.S. online bookmaker can add their name to the growing roster of bookmakers that will hopefully be accepting sports wagers by the start of the NFL season. The regular season is scheduled to begin on September 9, 2021.

WynnBet has announced the signing of an exclusive deal with the San Carlos Apache Tribe. Under the terms of the deal, WynnBet will offer retail sports betting at the Apache Gold Casino and Apache Sky Casino. They will also get the opportunity to offer mobile sports betting through the bookmaker's new website.

What's Happening in Connecticut?

After inking an agreement to provide sports betting at the Mohegan Sun properties in Connecticut, Kambi was shocked to find out that Tribe leadership decided to go a different direction. The Mohegan Tribe has signed an exclusive deal with Fanduel to provide both retail and online sports betting options to the residents of Connecticut.

This was a huge blow for Kambi, a bookmaker that is trying hard to gain entry into the U.S. sports betting market. While the original agreement still exists, Kambi will be entitled to receive betting revenue from sports betting operations provided by Fanduel.
