A Tentative Sports Betting Launch Date is Set in North Carolina

March 5, 2024

As residents in North Carolina learned, getting mobile sports betting legislation past legislators was the hard part. After several years of futility, the NC House and Senate finally passed the appropriated sports betting legislation in the Early part of June 2023. By the middle of the month, Governor Roy Cooper had picked up a pin and made the legislation law.

In recent months, many of the nation's sports betting operators have been working diligently with the North Carolina Lottery to secure licenses. To date, eight (8) retail and mobile operators have been granted the licenses they have coveted. The names of those eight (8) operators include:

It's noteworthy that the first official license was granted to Caesars Sportsbook and its partner the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Tribe. That event was commemorated by Ripley Rand, the current chair of the North Carolina State Lottery Commission. In a press release, he stated:

"Issuing the first interactive sports wagering operator licenses today represents a major milestone in establishing legal sports betting in North Carolina." He added, “North Carolinians can begin signing up for accounts on their mobile devices on Friday with the confidence they will soon be able to make wagers on their favorite sporting events securely and responsibly."

Of the aforementioned options, only the last operator would fall into the category of a little-known operator. Note: There could be additional operators joining the fray in the coming months.

Account Registrations Begin

As the North Carolina sports betting community developed, there was going to be a time the NC residents would be able to start betting on sports in-state. Effective March 1, 2023, all licensed operators were given the green light to start registering new customers and allow them to start making deposits. To register with any licensed operators, prospective customers must be at least 21 years old. Additionally, they must complete the registration process via an IP address that is assigned to NC.

With top sports betting operators ready to do battle for new customers, attractive welcome bonus offers have come front and center as a marketing tool. It's up to NC sports bettors to choose the offer or offers that will best suit their desires.

There is a much-awaiting registration frenzy underway. Why? In conjunction will allowing registrations to be, the North Carolina Lottery set a tentative sports betting launch date of March 11, 2024. To the delight of NC college basketball fans, the launch will take place just before the ACC Conference Tournament and the "Big Dance" (March Madness) that is set to start the week after that. Yes, NC basketball fans will be able to bet on their beloved college basketball before the season is over.

New sports bettors are cautioned to wager responsibly. To combat the potential for problem gambling issues, each operator is required by law to actively take part in ongoing problem gambling initiatives at the state and national levels.
