The Supreme Court has handed down its ruling that states are to be allowed to make their own laws governing gambling on sports (both professional and college level sports). This is a reversal of a 1992 law that was signed by then President George H.W. Bush that prohibited the practice. At that point in time it was believed that gambling on sports would risk the integrity of the games themselves.
The ruling from the Court makes it possible for states to open up their laws to the possibility of legalized sports betting within their borders. Many states are expected to take the government up on this offer as it were and start to legalize the practice within their borders right away. It would give them the opportunity to obtain much needed revenue that they may not have access to right at this moment.
Reactions to the ruling have come from all sides. Many figures from both major political parties are celebrating this ruling as a win for the people. Governor Chris Christie was among those who took to Twitter to express his hope about this ruling. He Governor and others are saying that this is a state's rights issue and that the Court's decision is correct because it helps to enhance the rights of the people to make their own decisions in regards to how they spend their money.
The state of New Jersey was one of the plaintiffs in this particular case brought before the court. Thus, they are among one of the most interested parties in the outcome. Although in a lot of ways it was expected that the Court would rule in this manner, that was far from a known thing. There was still a chance that they could reverse course or kick things back down to a lower court.
At the end of the day, this likely means more sports betting options for people across all fifty states in the very near future. It is not unreasonable to think that there are going to be a lot more legal gamblers coming up during this particular point in American history.
