The year 2022 figures to the year that several important states finally start the sports betting ball rolling. There could be a lot of activity coming over the news wires as things heat up in California and Florida during the summertime. For now, it looks like some of the nation’s Indian Tribes are making an impact with sports betting in Oregon and Wisconsin.
In Wisconsin, the state’s Indian Tribes are in control of sports betting throughout the state. Currently, that includes the Oneida Casino (Oneida Tribe) in Green Bay, which offers sports betting along with the St. Croix Chippewa Indians who are also taking sports bets at their casino in northwestern Wisconsin.
As of February 18, 2022, the Potawatomi Tribe has reached an agreement to also start taking bets through their Potawatomi Hotel & Casino. The accord was reached between Tribe representatives and Gov. Tony Evers. It’s noteworthy that in the agreement, the Potawatomi will also be allowed to legally accept sports wagers at the tribe's Forest County casino.
Currently, the Oneida Tribe is allowed to take wagers on pretty much any sports events with the exception of college games that involve Wisconsin or college games being played in Wisconsin venues. At this time, only retail sports betting is allowed.
Though the Potawatomi have yet to announce any specifics, it’s a good bet that what they will end up with will be very similar to what the Oneida Tribe is doing.
