The residents of Michigan are one step closer to online sports betting. The Stars Group and PointsBet were announced as the state's first sports betting partners in early January 2020. Each company will be able to provide both online and land-based sports gambling to adults in the state.
It was a happy holiday season for Michigan bettors. In December Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed a bill that would legalize online poker, online casinos, and online sports betting. The bill makes New Jersey just the fourth state to offer all three types of online gaming. The law currently allows for a maximum of 24 gaming operators in the state.
Both The Stars Group and PointsBet are major names in the online gambling industry. Each has established successful operations in other states. The companies must create a partnership with a land-based gaming venue in Michigan before they can offer online gambling. Both have chosen to partner with Native American casinos.
The Stars Group is the company behind the Fox Bet sports betting brand which already has a presence in the New Jersey online gambling market. It will look to expand its grip on online sports betting with retail and online sportsbooks in Michigan. It is likely that sports betting will be the first type of online betting to make its appearance in Michigan.
The news from Michigan comes as more US jurisdictions seem poised to consider online gambling in 2020. States that have already approved gaming measures are benefiting from the revenues that online gambling provides. These revenues can easily produce millions each year for important state programs.
