Update on Gambling Initiatives in Alabama
August 6, 2022The fact is the Alabama state legislature has been very slow to act on sports betting and online casino initiatives. This should not come as a surprise given how conservative the state has been towards all forms of gambling over the years.
Alabama Sen. Greg Albritton has certainly shown himself to be a big backer of bringing certain forms of gambling to the residents of Alabama. In an interview with Maddie Biertempfel of WHN, Albritton stated:
“I’m doing all that I know to do. I’m still trying to work with House members and reach out to the governor’s office to find out where we are and to draw a consensus."
With the next legislative session not scheduled until March of 2023, he will be working behind the scenes to create support for a lottery, sports betting, and casino gambling, both retail and online.
So far, he has not been able to get a viable bill to the floor of the House of Representatives. He hopes to get something going in March of next year with the goal of putting a gambling initiative in front of Alabama voters by the time the 2024 election cycle rolls around.
