As legislative sessions near an end throughout the U.S., it looks like a few states are hitting the pause button on online gambling legislative efforts. That certainly appears to be the case in Texas, Alabama, and Rhode Island. Here is a look at what's going on in these three states.
In April 2023, lawmakers in Rhode Island presented online casino legislation (SB 948) that looked like it had a chance to pass. After further consideration, members of the Senate have expressed concerns over the legislation.
One of the key concerns revolves around giving one (1) online casino operator unchallenged access to the RI online casino market. That one operator would be Bally Casino. It's worth noting that the Bally Corporation is already operating two retail casinos within the state's boundaries. Some Senators are wondering if more competition would be preferable for the benefit of RI residents. Such a change is fully supported by the Sports Betting Alliance (SBA).
Other concerns expressed by Senators included concerns about betting limits, security and problem gambling initiatives, changing the age limit from 18 to 21, and advertising.
At this point, it's not clear if this legislation is going anywhere before the end of 2023.
