Connecticut iGaming regulations have now entered full effect

September 11, 2021

Denise Merrill, the Connecticut Secretary of State, said on the website that the iGaming regulations have now entered full effect. What does that mean? With the regulatory structure established, the licensing and responsible gambling protocol has entered its final stages. The state legislature and the governor approved the regulation so that they can launch online gambling in Connecticut.

What Next?

Action toward legalization will begin as sites start to pop up after the defining of these laws. They already did work for some of the sports betting operators, and the land-based operators appear ready to go. Connecticut only waits for one more approval—the Bureau of Indian Affairs will need to approve the updated compacts with the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe and the Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut. This may prove easier during the time of coronavirus, however, as many people have stopped going to the land-based casinos. Traditional casinos need to find ways to keep the revenue coming in, and the online environment may be the answer they need.

Approval Happening Relatively Fast

The overall process of legalization in Connecticut has happened at an accelerated rate far superior to other states. While Connecticut discussed legalizing online gambling for years, state legislature only approved it this year. Governor Ned Lamont signed the bill into law on May 27, 2021. With such a recent push, it shows you why you should feel surprised at how quickly it has proceeded to approval. Most people believe that sports betting will be legal as early as October with everything going smoothly.

Positives from All Sides

Casinos, which have suffered incredible losses under the pandemic, see this as a way to stop the bleeding. Meanwhile, modernizing gaming will generate tax revenue for state and local municipal governments. The impact stretches above and beyond regional benefits, and Connecticut is expected to generate $418 million annually once the market matures.

Launch: What to Expect

No one knows what the digital lottery platform will be named. You may see it launch under one brand and switch to a different brand later. Most think that the lottery will launch under the brand name, "Sugarhouse." You can expect to see tons of buzz around each launch as it happens. Many people want a safe alternative to going to the physical establishments for gaming.

Sports betting will be the likely first sector to launch. The online lottery games will launch second. You can expect a period of testing, but we will most likely see it launched by the end of 2021 because the tribes are as eager to move it forward as the gamblers are.

Unfortunately, regarding online poker, we don't know of any poker operators that have reached out to the Mohegans or Mashantucket Pequots. This could mean that online poker may not be seen operating any time soon. For the time being, the biggest advantage comes from how we're moving forward with the legalization of online gambling. We need to look at it as winning the battle inch by inch.
