US mid-term elections with the GOP victory, has the online gambling industry down in the dumps. The US Republican party is very well known for its conservatism and strong ideals, a concept that the party cannot still explain to the US citizens. The Republican political party has been completely against any development of the online gaming industry in the United States since the very first beginning, when the party, strongly support the establishment of UIEGA, passing the bill in 2006. The Republican political party is also carrying the anti-online gambling flag during this outrageous crusade, a campaign sponsored by casino mogul Sheldon Adelson. Sheldon Adelson has starred several embarrassing episodes in the past years against the US administration for not supporting Israel’s conflict and against any US state willing to regulate the online gambling market. Online poker supporters in the United States felt that the market was going to be shut down again as the Republican political party take majority in both houses, the Senate and the House of Representatives.
However, market analysts, the most optimistic ones, do not believe that the Republican political party is all full will Sheldon’s adepts. Some think that the Republicans taking majority of the political power in the US will not necessarily means the end of the online poker market in the nation. Some others are more realistic and understand better the way the US takes care of politics and we can only say that, those US states where purebred horserace betting takes place, will not be banned; not the same luck for the online gambling market, especially with casino and poker games. All this tittle-tattle is making the same Republican political party having second thoughts about the online gambling legislation. While some Republicans clearly see the Sheldon Adelson’s corruption in all this anti gambling campaigns, as the casino mogul is trying to secure his gambling monopoly, others still believe on a federal ban on online gambling. However, any federal veto on online gambling would go against the individual states rights under the US Constitution’s Tenth Amendment.
Nevertheless, not all Republicans are in favor of banning one of the most profitable markets in the world. Massachusetts has been one of those cases that have shown the citizens the way politicians are indeed. Democrat Martha Croakley has been opposing any form of online gambling in the state while Republican Charlie Baker has been fighting for online gambling as well as other civil rights like abortion and gay marriage. But the biggest threat is without doubt RAWA (the Restoration of America´s Wire Act), the federal bill introduced into both, the House of Representatives and the Senate, in March, that wants to restore the original interpretation of the 1961 Wire Act to ban any form of online gambling, a bill that could allow the Senate control any online activity.
