Ten conservatives organizations recently joined forces to send a letter opposing the proposed legislation to ban online gambling to top leaders of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees.
According to The Hill, the ten groups (Institute for Policy Innovation, Alliance for Freedom, Competitive Enterprise Institute, American Consumer Institute, Independent Women’s Forum, Freedom Action, R Street Institute, FreedomWorks, Institute for Liberty and Taxpayer Protection Alliance), calling the Restoration of America’s Wire Act introduced last month by Senator Lindsey Graham and Representative Jason Chaffetz « a broad overreach by the federal government over matters reserved for the states », urged Congress to stand against the measure. According to them, approval of the Adelson-backed legislation would set a dangerous precedent of “Internet censorship”.
“The Restoration of America’s Wire Act will reverse current law in many states and drastically increase the federal government’s regulatory power. Prohibiting states from legalizing and regulating the practice only ensures that it will be pushed back into the shadows where crime can flourish with little oversight », the letter read. According to the ten groups, an Internet gamblng ban would allow offshore operators to keep on targeting the American market without providing any consumer protections. A point of view shared with the Poker Players Alliance, the American Gaming Association and the Coalition for Consumer and Online Protection.
