On November 26 of 2013, New Jersey launched the first online gambling network in the United States. Online gambling is only legal for NJ citizens although New Jersey has been fighting with the US Federal Government to bring the online gambling industry to the rest of the US states for this year 2013; that was the main reason why other states had requested the Federal Government an analysis of the gambling industry. Sports betting and online gambling were two of the main issues in New Jersey on 2013 as well as the land-based casinos restriction that only allows their activity within Atlantic City limits. However, the state of New Jersey has been considered the oldest gambling state in the country and has been capable of turning this around.
Throughout its history, NJ has seen the gambling industry in the United States suffering too many changes; it was not until the end of the 1930s when gambling was legalized, again, after a period of almost 50 years where gambling was an outlawed practice. Horse racetrack gambling was legal once again in 1939 and, two decades later, the citizens of New Jersey voted in referendum the activity of bingos, raffles and lottery only from non-profit organizations, as well as amusement games from other businesses. In the 1950s, New Jersey started opening up the legal gambling industry until the 1970s; again, the most conservative part of the state decided to put a restriction on land-based casinos, confining them all into Atlantic City.
