Legal Gambling USA
Online casino games, poker, sports and horse racing betting websites authorized in USA
One might ask: "Why have so few states passed such legislation, given the popularity of such activities?" The answer to that question is complicated. It involves issues related to Indian Tribe relationships, religious concerns, and the desire to avoid taking revenue from other gambling options like lotteries and horse racing.
A review of the process that each of the aforementioned states went through to pass iGaming legislation makes clear it's a contentious process. Obviously, some states believe it's worth the effort, considering how much tax revenue can be derived from online gambling activities.
Is online casino gambling popular in America? According to the American Gaming Association’s (AGA) Commercial iGaming Revenue Tracker, the revenue reported YTD through August 2025 was just north of $900 million. That's from the combined efforts of the aforementioned seven states. That represented a 31.1% increase over the same reporting period from 2024. That indicates that not only is online casino gambling popular, it's also on the rise.
Note: Everything written here focuses solely on legal U.S. iGaming activities. The numbers would be many times higher if offshore online casino gambling were included in the mix. For purposes of this article, we want to stay focused on legal U.S. iGaming activities.
While the numbers show Americans fully embrace iGaming access, it begs the question: "Which online casino games of chance are available to Americans?" Let's take a look.
The one thing that affects retail gaming access in America is the size of any given casino. Each retail casino has to decide which games it wants to offer, taking into account the available floor space for gaming activities.
It doesn't take an expert to note that slots get a large percentage of every casino floor. It makes sense, given the casino's advantage that comes from slot machines. Depending on the game, that advantage can range from about 3% to as high as 15%. Even at the low end, slots are still more lucrative for casinos than most basic bets on popular table games.
What online casinos can offer that retail casinos can't is immediate, easy access to thousands of online casino games. One large online casino in America might offer 2,000+ video slots, plus access to up to 100 table games. The floor space needed to do that in a retail casino environment is typically not there.
With so much from which to choose, you might be wondering exactly what kind of iGaming options you might encounter when visiting an America-based iGaming site like BetMGM, DraftKings, or Golden Nugget. Remember, online casino gambling is only legal in the aforementioned seven U.S. states. Well, here are some descriptions of what the typical U.S. iGaming site could have to offer:
Video Slots - Depending on an operator's chosen software providers, you might get access to as many as 2,000 video slots, covering a wide range of gaming formats and themes. Some of the top software providers you might encounter include SpinLogic (formerly RealTime Gaming (RTG), NetEnt, Microgaming, Play'n Go, and a host of small to mid-level providers.
Progressive Video Slots - A progressive video slot is a game that is linked between multiple operators in multiple states. As players make their wagers, a small percentage of each wager is siphoned off and placed in a progressive jackpot pool. The amount accumulates until one lucky player does what is required to claim the jackpot. Each time a jackpot is hit, the game will automatically reset to a baseline jackpot amount. Depending on the game, some jackpots have been known to reach 8-figures.
Video Poker - This is a variation driven category. While most of the games will revolve around 5-card draw, the rules could vary a lot from one variation to the next. These games will generally come from the same software providers listed above.
Keno & Specialty Games - In this category, you might encounter variations of Keno, Bingo, crash games, and scratch cards.
Traditional Online Casino Table Games - It's not unusual for an iGaming operator to limit the number of available table games. In some cases, the casino's advantage isn't enough to justify making access to such games easy and plentiful. Still, there has to be something available for casino table game enthusiasts. For certain, you can expect to get access to popular table games like Blackjack (multiple versions), Roulette (multiple versions), Craps, Texas/Casino Hold'em, and Baccarat. You might also get access to less popular games like Three-Card Poker, Pai Gow Poker, Caribbean Poker, Teen Patti, Dragon Tiger, and more.
Live Dealer Online Casino Table Games - To date, live casino or live dealer casino games are not readily available in the U.S. However, BetMGM has recently signed a contract with Evolution Gaming, looking to provide access to Evolution's Ezugi-affiliated brand. Said games have gone live in Pennsylvania, with expansion into other states expected soon.
Live casino games are streamed from studios set up to look and feel like a retail casino environment. There is a live dealer or croupier controlling the action, and in some cases, social interaction is permitted with the dealer and other players. Many of the games listed above under the traditional online casino table game category could be available under this category. Don't be surprised if you encounter lesser-known titles like Crazy Time, Mega Wheel, Monopoly, and Deal or No Deal.
Depending on the state in which you live, you might have as many as two dozen online casinos from which to choose. Since all licensed online casinos in America are heavily regulated and held to high standards, the choice or choices you make will depend a great deal on your personal preferences. With that in mind, here are some of the criteria you might want to consider when making your decisions
