It's time for everyone to recognize that online gambling has become a normal part of life in the U.S. and Europe. That is not something that is going to be missed by venture capitalists (VCs) who are always looking for great places to invest their money. After a lot of success investing in America's sports gambling infrastructure, it's onward and upward in support of a growing iGaming or online casino infrastructure.
Much of the credit for the current state of the U.S. online gambling market has to go to Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) providers like DraftKings and Fanduel. These providers have been offering online gambling options for close to 10 years now. A case could be made that the success of DFS gave the Supreme Court of the U.S. the basis for finally lifting the nation's ban on sports betting and certain forms of online gambling.
According to FanDuel cofounder Nigel Eccles, there would be no DFS sector had it not been for a few VCs showing a willingness to take a leap of faith. For sure, these VCs were skittish in the beginning. It's only when DFS started growing exponentially that minds were put at ease.
The success of Fanduel is undeniable, and brave VCs have been able to bask in that success. The same thing can be said as it relates to the U.S. sports betting sector. With 39 states now on board with retail and or online sports betting, it has been a successful endeavor. Yes, venture capitalists have been involved in minor ways with the financial propping up smaller sports betting operators like BetRivers and Fanatics. Of course, funding for larger operators like Caesars and BetMGM came from large corporate organizations backed by huge retail gambling revenue.
With sports betting firmly entrenched in the U.S. culture, VCs are bravely moving their focus to online casino gambling.
Today, the U.S. iGaming market is very small in comparison to the sports betting market. Only seven (7) states have successfully passed online gambling legislation. That list includes
What's interesting is the U.S. iGaming sector is on the cusp of an explosion. There are as many as five states that could pass the needed iGaming legislation in the first half of 2025. It's a good bet that VCs are paying attention and getting reading to again take a leap of faith.
One of the leaders in this movement is none other than Eccles through his startup VC firm BetHog. He'll be joining forces with 6th Man Ventures to provide up to $6 million in seeding money to prospective online casino operators. At the same time, VCs are moving cautiously because the legal landscape for online casino gambling is a bit muddled because of issues related to Indian control of gambling in nearly have of the states that want iGaming access.
For, it's good to see that VCs are showing a willingness to bring iGAming to key U.S. markets.
