Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and representatives of the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes arrived at an agreement on gambling in the Constitution State. The agreement puts the state in a positive direction toward the legalization of online sports betting and online gambling. Before the expansion happens, the bill must continue to progress in a positive direction.
Online gambling will see a 20 percent tax rate and sports betting will have a 13.75 percent tax rate. The new agreement will generate millions of dollars in tax revenue for the state, and the Connecticut Lottery Corporation will run many of its most popular games online. Since the pandemic struck in March 2020, casinos suffered a hard hit with fewer people going to their physical establishments. This struggle has made it easier for legislators to negotiate for online gambling since it would ease the difficulty facing the industry.
The agreement outlines nothing of what will happen with college sports betting. That distinction matters because while some states allow for college sports betting, others do not allow it. Others still may ban it specifically for home team games. What happens here remains to be seen.
You can still do brick-and-mortar sports betting if you would like. In fact, you can gamble at up to 15 sports betting locations. The whole state has these locations, but two of them are the most common like Hartford and Bridgeford where they are focused especially.
The state opened to online gambling on a limited basis on September 30. Several hundred people were allowed to open accounts and make wagers in the beginning. This action marked the first day in Connecticut where people could start with sports betting and online gambling and wager for seven days. After they finished with the soft launch, they will allow online gambling throughout the state. It took nearly a decade for this to become a reality in the state where you can participate in online sports betting and online gambling.
First, the pandemic has largely made it impossible for casinos to make money at their traditional establishments. While they can still make money, it isn't the same as what they could do in the past. Online gambling provides them with another way to make money. The other thing that may be helping legalization is that billionaire Sheldon Adelson, someone who did a lot of lobbying to keep online gambling illegal throughout America, passed away, and while there may still be some pushback, it's not as much.
Democratic Governor Ned Lamont helped with reaching the deal that allowed for the opening of online gambling. This legalization could prove helpful for the state since other states like New Jersey earned $866.1 million in revenue in 2020 alone. That should highlight the potential for what the states can earn through online gambling.
