Caesars Entertainment Interactive (Caesars) has a history of growing its online gambling presence in the U.S. through acquisition. That was the case in 2021 when they purchased UK-based William Hill only to peel off the European assets for sale. The company is at it again, having just announced the completion of a transaction to purchase WynnBet's online casino assets in Michigan.
This serves as an indication that WynnBet's destiny in the U.S. online gambling market will focus on sports betting. Likewise, it's an indication that Caesars is very serious about being a major player in the country's online casino gambling market.
The news of this impending acquisition was announced in February of 2024. At the time, Matt Sunderland, a Caesars Senior V.P. had this to say about the company's motivation for the acquisition:
“As we continue to grow our iGaming franchise, the assumption of WynnBET’s iGaming operations in Michigan allows us to tap into a significant market and customer base, providing a crucial step forward in growing our digital products and offering players more ways to play.”
As part of the transaction, Caesars reached out to extend WynnBet's partnership with Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Michigan. It's important to note the contract was extended under the WynnBet brand because Caesars' management has decided to keep running WynnBet's online casino platform in Michigan.
In a press release, Caesars Digital President Eric Hession told reporters:
“Caesars Entertainment would like to thank the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the Michigan Gaming Control Board for their collaboration through this process.”
The objective of this purchase is very clear. Management at Caesars is looking to boost its presence as an online casino operator in the U.S. With that in mind, this could be the first transaction of others to come in the future. For now, Caesars looks like they are trying to generate enough online casino revenue in Michigan to overtake BetRivers as the state's #4 online casino operator.
Before the acquisition, here were the online casino revenue rankings in Michigan:
With WynnBet's customer base bringing in another $2.5 million a month, that should be enough to help Caesars make its positioning goal.
From WynnBet's perspective, the sale makes a lot of sense. Currently, there are only six (6) states that have legalized online casino gambling. That includes
It looks as though WynnBet's management found itself at a crossroads. They could either sell off the online casino assets in Michigan and exit the online casino market altogether or make a significant investment and try to compete in the other states. By deciding to sell the Michigan assets, they can leave it to the major players like FanDuel, DraftKings, and Caesars to battle for online casino dominance.
It's noteworthy that as many as four (4) states will be looking at passing online casino legislation in 2025. It's a good bet Caesars wants a piece of the pie.
