There are certain US casinos that are preparing to reopen after having been closed for some time due to COVID-19 restrictions. Most casinos in the United States and many other parts of the world have been closed since at least mid-March. That obviously makes it incredibly difficult to survive as casinos rely heavily on constant traffic from repeat patrons. Given that many of them are not getting that right now, it is a very trying time to be in the casino business, and most are just not able to carry on if they don't take some actions right now to start to reopen.
There is a serious clash now happening between the Governor of Nevada and the Mayor of Las Vegas. The Mayor would like to reopen her city and claims that the virus spreading in Las Vegas will not happen in the same ways that it did in China for example. She even went on the Anderson Cooper program on CNN and stated as much. Cooper was dismayed by her comments and told her that she was being "really ignorant".
The Governor of Nevada has not used such direct language, but he has asserted that the state has not yet reached the CDC guidelines for reopening, and it is his belief that the state should not attempt to do so at this time. It would be a grave injustice to the people of the state of Nevada to jump ahead of the CDC recommended guidelines to get the state reopened.
The casinos will likely reopen fairly soon, though they will have restricted guidelines on how many players may be at each table and other areas within the casino. This is intended to minimize the contact between as many people as possible, but it is unclear if this will actually keep people safer.
Some of the major casino companies in Las Vegas such as Wynn Resorts have stated that they are ready to reopen, and they are prepared to do exactly that just as soon as they get the go-ahead signal. That could start a tidal wave of other casinos getting in on the act and deciding that they are ready to reopen as well. It may not be long at all before there are more than a few calls to get all of these casinos back up and running as soon as possible. Only time will tell how this one plays out.
