As each state has gone through looking at passing online legislation, the state's representatives have all had one major concern in mind. Will passing online gambling legislation ignite the flames of problem gambling among its residents?
For sure, the passing of online gambling legislation was going to increase the possibility of each respective state facing a rise in problem gambling issues. Believing that has never been much of a stretch. After 5+ years of legalized sports betting and online casino gambling in some states, there is enough information to answer such questions. Yes, there has been a rise in the percentages and sheer numbers of problem gamblers.
By the numbers, a recent study indicates that somewhere between 7-10 million Americans have a moderate-severe gambling problem. That's as high as 7% of the U.S. adult population.
Contrary to common belief, no one in the U.S. online gambling industry wants to see residents struggling with gambling problems. It's a misnomer to believe online gambling operators don't care because it often results in building their revenue and profits. The reality is it's bad business for any gambling service provider to be seen feeding the gambling beast.
In a massive show of force, seven (7) of the nation's top online gambling operators have banded together to form the Responsible Online Gaming Association or ROGA. This organization has been formed to serve as a problem gambling resource for individuals who are struggling with their sports or casino betting activities. The group has also been created to look at ways to proactively address such potential problems.
The primary participants in ROGA include
In a recent press release, ROGA Executive Director and Nevada Council on Problem Gambling President Dr. Jennifer Shatley stated:
"By coming together with a clear set of objectives, ROGA and our members will work to enhance consumer protections and help provide easier and more efficient access to responsible gaming tools for consumers to enjoy the entertainment of online gaming."
It's worth noting that based on iGaming market revenue, these seven (7) operators have control over 85% of the U.S. market. The only material operator to have not yet thrown its hat into the ring is Caesars Entertainment Interactive, the parent company of Caesars Sportsbook and Casino. Perhaps, they will jump in at a later date.
In aggregate, the group has pledged $20 million to fund the group. That money and future monetary investments will be made to promote responsible gambling and provide periodic studies on the subject matter at hand.
This announcement could not come at a better time given recent concerns over the gambling scandal related to Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani and his interpreter. ROGA will exist to protect the integrity of the U.S. online gambling industry as the remaining 12 U.S. states contemplate passing their own online gambling legislation in the future.
