Legalized online gaming in Pennsylvania could be one step closer to a reality. Lawmakers in the state have agreed on a joint hearing to discuss online gambling. The meeting could occur as early as the third week of February.
Pennsylvania is currently debating HB 392, a measure that would legalize many forms of online gambling. The bill seems to have support all the way to the governor's mansion. Governor Tom Wolf was so confident in its passage that he included revenue from online gaming in his 2017-18 budget. Wolf believes that revenue from online gambling in the state could top $150 million.
HB 392 was originally set to be debated by the Pennsylvania House Gaming Oversight Committee but this meeting was canceled on February 13. It was decided that the bill would move directly to a discussion between the Pennsylvania House and Senate. Many see this as a positive move. In the past, the two bodies have been unable to agree on online gambling legislation.
Placing the bill directly before the House and Senate moves the measure one step closer to law. HB 392 resolves many of the issues that have caused prior attempts to legalize online gambling in Pennsylvania to fail. First and foremost among these is a resolution of the state's tax-share issue. Instead of a tax-share solution, the new bill proposes a licensing fee for online gaming providers.
If the hearing goes as expected, residents of Pennsylvania could soon be playing all of their favorite casino games as well as daily fantasy sports from the comfort of their own homes.
