Early in January, Mediarex Sports & Entertainment CEO Alex Dreyfus announced twelve managers for the Global Poker Index’s international teams to participate in the upcoming Global Poker League. The League is split into two regions: North America, covered in a previous article, and Eurasia. This article will profile only those managers from the EU.
Here are the final three Eurasian and South American franchise managers that have been announced so far:
Brazilian player Andre Akkari will coach the Sao Paulo Metropolitans. Mr. Akkari boasts over $3 million in online winnings and $1.4 million in live winnings. Akkari has grossed the third highest in all of Brazil. Akkari is an ex-software engineer specializing in flash animations.
The Hong Kong Stars, the only Asian team in the competition, will be headed by Celina Lin. Though she is relatively inexperienced compared to the other Global Poker League team managers, and has less than $1 million in winnings, she has still established herself as a strong player since her victory in the the Macau Poker Cup Red Dragon main event.for $110,000. Outside of professional poker, Lin’s hobbies are Pilates, yoga and tennis.
Lastly, Anataloy “nl_profit” Filatov will take charge of the Moscow Wolverines. Moscow based Filatov is another relatively inexperienced player to have been chosen as team manager--especially considering his younger age of 27 and the fact that he scores only 25th on the Russian region all-time money list, indicating that there may have been stronger choices to lead the Russian team. Still, Filatov represents the competitive Russian region, and has been given a chance to prove himself on the world stage of the Global Poker League.
The GPL draft will take place on February 25. Don’t miss it!
