When the U.S. Supreme Court lifted the nation's sports betting ban in 2018, the Mississippi state legislature had already effectively legalized sports betting for the state's residents. They did this by the repeal of its state law prohibiting sports betting.
Clearly, it took a while to get sports betting to the people. The first retail sportsbook finally went live in September of 2021 as BetMGM Mississippi partnered with a majority of the retail casinos operating within the state. Therein lies the problem. The current sports betting legislation only permits sports betting at a retail sportsbook or kiosk. Without access to online sports betting options, sports bettors are being forced to make the drive if they want to place wagers.
To date, several attempts have been made to pass online sports betting legislation. The latest attempt came when SB 2396 hit the senate floor. That bill called for allowing each retail casino to run one online sports betting skin. The bill never gained traction. With that said, there have been rumblings something could get done in 2022. Like in many other states, it just seems to be a growing process that some states need to go through.
