New Jersey receives proposition to tax sports betting

September 30, 2014

State Governor Chris Christie is being one of the most popular politicians in the country at this time; his battle against practically any development in the Garden State, has led New Jersey citizens to claim publicly a change on the government’s policies. When it comes to the online gambling industry, Christie has had to take his proud as the economy of an entire US state was not going to be in jeopardy just because of the conservative party’s bigotry. On this matter, the online gambling industry will be seeing a new change by October under District Judge Michael Shipp management. For the next coming month, the Garden State is going to evaluate the pros and cons that sports betting operations could bring in to NJ’s economy. New Jersey, with its iconic Atlantic City, has been one of the gambling states since the very early ages of the United States; and now is the time for the Garden State to continue with the development of such a fructuous market. The state of New Jersey is receiving soon the new directive by Governor Chris Christie but the main gambling operators are going to wait until US District Judge Michael Shipp takes care of the subject in October.

A New Jersey Senator, Jim Whelan, and State Assemblyman, Vincent Mazzeo, have submitted a new proposal to the State Government: 0.25% tax on all sports wagers. This new initiative has brought up to the table different issues that governments and anti-gambling organizations still consider as dangerous. But the sports books market has no other way to get to its customers but by offsite channels like the Internet. With this new proposal from both NJ State Governor and US District Judge, the state will be collecting a great deal on taxes at the same time that (this is the second part of the sports betting tax proposal and, probably the most interesting tax application ever), the taxes could be used to fight corruption in the US sports, a very important issue nowadays after the recent events: game fixing, football players scandals, bribery within the sports institutions, etc. The organization to take care of the US sports corruption would be the Game Integrity Department.

Adam Silver, the Commissioner of the NBA, received a letter thanking him for his commitment to fight and eradicate corruption on sports as well as introducing new regulation for the sports betting market. With this sports betting tax, games could be monitored by autonomous investigators, introducing a new national model for the sports betting industry. New Jersey Senator, Jim Whelan, stated: “The position of the state right now is we’re not doing anything with sports betting, the short version. So for us to do it could be construed as a tax and the state is empowering and so on and so forth. This is what we see as a good faith common sense solution to this challenge of trying to have sports betting in New Jersey but literally across the country. If we’re fortunate enough to get it, it’s not going to stop here”.
